An elegant antique French writing slope, also known as an écritoire, dating to the Napoleon III period (circa 1850–1870). Crafted in richly figured mahogany with striking burr walnut veneer to the exterior, the case displays warm tones and attractive grain throughout. The fall front opens to reveal a green leather writing surface with gilt-tooled border, framed by brass hinges and fittings.

Inside, the fitted interior includes shaped letter compartments and lidded inkwell recesses, offering both practicality and period charm.

 

The proportions are compact yet substantial, making it ideal for display on a desk, console or occasional table while retaining full usability as a writing slope.  A classic mid-19th century piece combining decorative appeal with functional design.  A refined example of French craftsmanship from the Napoleon III era, suitable for collectors of antique desk accessories, writing boxes and period furniture.
